Welcome to our first blog post.

Whether you're an entrepreneur operating from your home, a small mom-and-pop shop at the corner of the street, a Small-to-Medium size business (SMB), or a multi-national conglomerate, chances are you have a phone and phone number. Most of us expect those phones to be plugged into an old-fashioned telephone jack like you've been used to growing up or working in your office. But within the past few years, this has been rapidly changing.

Gone are the days of those old telephone jacks and telecom equipment closets. According to The VoIP Report (and their listed sources), there are at least 1 billion+ VoIP users today, and a whopping 70 percent of companies indicated they have deployed unified communications (UC) in the cloud or plan to do so. You can check out other staggering VoIP facts and their sources here, but the main thing is this: the telecommunications industry is changing rapidly.

So why are so many companies making the switch to VoIP? To see why, we first must understand what VoIP is and why it's so beneficial to those who adopt it.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. That's just a fancy way of saying making voice phone calls over the internet. The theory behind developing this technology was simply to be able to place a call to anyone in the world via our vast, interconnected Internet. This has an obvious benefit, especially to businesses, because almost all companies have internet access and computers. Therefore, you can get a VoIP phone, plug it into your computer using an Ethernet cable, and use your basic internet connection to make phone calls. Pretty cool, right?

There's a lot of technology behind these VoIP phones that make this possible. They use SIP trunking and codecs to turn your voice into a little data packet, send it over the internet to a cloud-based server, and route it another user... all in a matter of milliseconds. And the best part is, you don't have to pay exceedingly high amounts of money to a telecommunications corporation to manage your telephone jacks, equipment needs, and PSTN.

VoIP service providers install network switches to connect a multitude of phones at a single location.

This leads us to our ultimate question of why so many companies are switching to VoIP. A landline phone system typically costs businesses an average of $50 per line each month, and that rate only includes local and sometimes domestic calling. Monthly VoIP plans are available at under $25 dollars per line – a 50 percent savings. ("Just the Facts, Please: Your Go-To List of Cold, Hard VoIP Statistics", The VoIP Report) They also note that these services can save companies with 100 employees up to 191 company-wide hours per day, 49,660 hours/year, and up to $920,000 per year in productivity. Talk about improving your bottom line.

These facts just scratch the surface of the benefits of VoIP and unified cloud communications:

  • Mobility for the user to have a hardware phone and a software app to receive calls in the office or on the go

  • Safe and secure access to voicemail boxes, customer portals, cloud services, and back-end programs using standard data encryption

  • Ease of use and implementation with simple commands and ability to add or subtract phones and phone lines with ease

  • Customizable user portals to manage users, voicemail, auto-attendants, call queues, operating hours, call directing, etc. etc. etc.

The list goes on and on. No wonder everyone is making the switch. Hopefully this post was able to answer your basic curiosities about VoIP and some of its benefits. No matter your business' size, shape, age, or position, we think you can agree that VoIP and UC can definitely help your company in a vast number of ways.
